YouTube is testing a new experimental Color-Coded Video Feeds

Follow Us On

YouTube is testing out a new experimental feature on Android and iOS devices that sorts videos into color-coded feeds – red, blue and green. Only select users have access to this rainbow-inspired concept so far.

The idea is to curate videos based on dominant colors in thumbnails or possibly even in the video content itself. So when you open the YouTube app, you can pick a color theme for your homepage feed. Then a splash of videos matching that color pops up, adding some visual intrigue without fully replacing your normal recommendations.

Details on exactly how videos get chosen or why YouTube is trying this are scarce. Product leader Allison Toh has confirmed the colorful test but not revealed any rollout plans or strategic reasons behind it. The purpose seems more about creating an aesthetically pleasing batch of videos tied to a specific hue rather than sorting by strict color categories.

This concept taps into a common marketing practice called color harmony – orchestrating content palettes to optimize visual appeal. Cosmetics, fashion and other industries all leverage color compatibility strategies in product lines. So YouTube may be experimenting to see if color-coordinated content performs better too.

There are also analytically benefits, as the feeds could demonstrate how color associations drive content choices beyond just topical interests. So this quirky feature offers some creative personalization while allowing YouTube to study how color impacts user behavior. Whether we’ll all get rainbow homepages someday remains to be seen.
