The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has updated its Adaptive-Sync compliance for gaming monitors to support a new dual mode feature. Upcoming displays with Adaptive-Sync v1.1a certification will allow switching between 4K 144Hz and 1080p 280Hz resolutions.

Major gaming monitor manufacturers like LG, ASUS, and more are poised to unveil Dual Mode models at CES 2024 next week. LG’s new UltraGear OLED lineup and ASUS’s ROG SWIFT PG32UCDP OLED already boast the tech.

Dual Mode effectively provides gamers flexibility in prioritizing either higher fidelity 4K visuals up to 144 frames per second, or blazing 1080p frame rates up to 280 fps. The seamless transition better adapts displays to both cinematic single player and hyper competitive esports gaming usage.

Monitors can also use optional factory “overclocking” to enable faster uncertified refresh rates. However they still need to pass all rigorously VESA compliance benchmarks in default and peak speeds during Adaptive-Sync testing.

Certified AdaptiveSync Dual Mode logo denotes vetted performance at both 4K and 1080p resolutions according to listed specs. Shoppers can look for models hitting up 144Hz/4K and 280Hz/1080p with reliable variable refresh rate support

The Dual Mode update joins 100+ displays already passing VESA Adaptive Sync compliance for dynamic gaming visuals. Integration into major OEM designs shows steady ecosystem adoption since launching in late 2021.
