Tesla CEO Elon Musk surprised attendees at the “We, Robot” event by introducing a futuristic new vehicle: the Tesla Robovan. Far from a traditional passenger van, the Robovan features a sleek, Art Deco-inspired design with no visible wheels, resembling a streamlined train engine. Musk emphasized that this autonomous van can transport up to 20 passengers or large quantities of goods, aiming to tackle high-density transportation challenges.
“The Robovan is what’s gonna solve for high density,” Musk explained. “If you want to take a sports team somewhere or drive costs down to 5-10 cents per mile, the Robovan is your answer.”
Designed for the Tesla Network, Tesla’s upcoming autonomous ride-hailing service, the Robovan will serve both commercial needs and Tesla owners. The vehicle aligns with hints Tesla has dropped in its Master Plan Part Deux and recent shareholder meetings about creating high-passenger-density transport solutions.
The Robovan also enters a growing electric van market, joining competitors like the Volkswagen ID Buzz, Mercedes eSprinter, Ford E-Transit, and more, further intensifying the race for sustainable, mass transport solutions.
