Spotify has accused Apple of failing to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), claiming the tech giant is deliberately stalling.
Daniel Ek, CEO of the Swedish streaming service, urged the European Union (EU) to enforce the law, calling Apple’s efforts a “farce.” Despite facing a €1.8 billion fine for anti-competitive practices, Apple allegedly continues to impose restrictive fees and conditions on developers.
EU competition chief Teresa Ribera confirmed that a decision on Apple’s compliance will be announced in March. In response, Apple insists it has taken adequate steps and even published a white paper detailing its stance on the EU’s interoperability laws.
The dispute between Spotify and Apple stems from previous lawsuits accusing Apple of blocking developers from promoting cheaper offers outside the App Store. This practice forces users to make purchases through Apple’s platform, reducing developers’ revenue.
Apple argues that Spotify has benefited from its ecosystem, using Apple’s tools and technologies while leveraging the company’s trusted reputation. The conflict underscores the growing scrutiny over tech giants’ dominance and the effectiveness of the Digital Markets Act in ensuring fair competition.
