Streaming service Showmax is gearing up for a major revamp next month, complete with a brand new app, visual refresh and huge content expansion. The platform announced it will roll out over 1,300 hours of new Showmax Originals across Africa in 2024, averaging 3.5 hours of fresh local programming daily.
The ambitious content slate comes as Showmax solidifies its partnership with NBCUniversal and Sky. It caps off the streaming underdog’s steady rise in the African market against heavyweight competitors like Netflix.
Kicking off the banner content year, Showmax will debut 21 Originals in February spanning dramas, comedies, reality series and more from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and beyond. Highlights include Nigerian titles like the James Omokwe epic drama Cheta’m, a reality show following actress Rahama Sadau’s family, romance feature The Counsellor and season 2 of hit drama Flawsome.
Additional African Originals will follow this initial wave each month. Showmax is leveraging experience and insights gained as a longtime African content leader to drive viewing numbers. For instance, they tapped young, award-winning writer Dami Elebe to helm Flawsome’s second season after its breakout first installment.
While release dates remain undisclosed for many fresh programs, the slate underscores Showmax’s expanded production budget and desire to spotlight diverse African stories.
