Amid some recent controversies and studio closure news, Xbox may have a major surprise in store to help get fans excited again. According to reliable insider Tom Warren, one of the big announcements at next month’s Xbox Games Showcase could be the unveiling of a brand new Doom game from id Software.
In a report for The Verge detailing the “turmoil” surrounding Xbox currently, Warren made a seemingly deliberate tease about Microsoft hoping “some new game announcements will help them turn the tide in their favor.” He stated they’ll be “banking on some new game announcements lifting the Doom around Xbox,” purposefully capitalizing the word Doom.
This carefully crafted reference points to the showcase potentially providing the first look at the next installment in the iconic first-person shooter franchise. Fans have been eagerly awaiting news of id Software’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed 2020 release Doom Eternal.
While neither Microsoft nor Bethesda have acknowledged that a new Doom is in development, a previously leaked Bethesda roadmap did mention a project called “Doom Year Zero.” However, because that document was so old, plans, including the proposed title, may have changed.
There were also rumors that ID could be working on a new Quake game with MachineGames, who recently hinted at their interest in the brand. However, most expect Doom to take the lead and pave the way for any Quake comeback.
