Mozilla, the company behind the Firefox web browser, has launched a new startup named Mozilla.ai, with the goal of “building a trustworthy and independent open-source AI ecosystem.”
The company stated that it will initially invest $30 million in the development of this new startup.
“The vision for Mozilla.ai is to make it easy to develop trustworthy AI products. We will build things and hire/collaborate with people that share our vision: AI that has agency, accountability, transparency and openness at its core. Mozilla.ai will be a space outside big tech and academia for like-minded founders, developers, scientists, product managers and builders to gather,” said Mark Surman, Mozilla’s executive president and head of Mozilla.ai, in a blog post.
Furthermore, the company added that by working together, this group of people can change the tide to establish an autonomous, decentralized, and trustworthy AI ecosystem – a true counterbalance to the status quo.
The new startup Mozilla.ai will initially focus on tools that make generative AI safer and more transparent, as well as people-centric recommendation systems that do not misinform or harm the company’s well-being.
The company stated that it will announce other initiatives, partners, and events in which people can engage later this year.
Mozilla completed the acquisition of the US-based virtual spaces and events start-up Active Replica in December of last year to strengthen its metaverse strategy.
Mozilla acquired the firm as the company expands Hubs, its virtual reality (VR) collaboration platform.
