Intel Discontinues Its Cryo Cooling Technology

Intel announced that its Cryo Cooling Technology would be phased out on July 1st, 2023. This technology, which was famous for powering Thermoelectric CPU coolers such as Cooler Master’s MasterLiquid ML360 Sub-Zero EVO and EK’s QuantumX Delta TEC liquid cooling water block, is now a thing of the past.

Exclusive to compatible Intel CPUs and motherboards, Intel’s Cryo Cooling Technology was a special combination of hardware, software, and firmware enhancements. But now that it’s been discontinued, enthusiasts of Intel’s cutting-edge technology are unable to reach extremely low temperatures with their latest 14th generation Core CPUs.

Intel has remained tight-lipped regarding the exact reasons behind this discontinuation. Speculations point towards the high costs associated with the technology and the limited consumer interest it garnered. These TEC-enhanced cooling solutions were not only expensive but also restricted to Intel processors, thus catering to a niche user base. Extreme overclockers were primarily interested in these solutions due to their high price tags, making them less accessible to the broader market. For instance, EK’s QuantumX Delta TEC liquid cooling water block carried a price tag of €379.95.

The Core of Intel’s Cryo Cooling Technology

The core principles of Intel’s Cryo technology were similar to those of previous TEC (Thermoelectric Cooling) technologies. TEC coolers use electricity to transfer heat, causing one side of the TEC to become hot and the other to become cold. Because of their larger thermal delta, CPUs naturally transfer heat to the colder side of the TEC. The TEC’s hot side was in charge of effectively dispersing heat into the linked cooler. The cooler was simply charged with cooling a hotter processor, allowing for lower CPU thermals. One disadvantage of TEC cooling is the amount of electricity required to run the TEC.

Intel’s strategy was distinct since it combined TEC cooling technologies with certain motherboards, CPUs, and system software. In order to minimize condensation and maintain ideal CPU temperatures, Intel carefully balanced the consumption of TEC, a typical concern with sub-ambient cooling systems. Their goal was to democratize sub-ambient cooling so that a larger range of consumers might benefit from it.

While bidding adieu to Intel’s Cryo CPU cooling technology is undoubtedly a somber moment for PC enthusiasts, the rationale behind this discontinuation is discernible. Intel is actively reallocating resources to areas that promise more significant long-term benefits. The company’s decision aligns with a strategic focus on optimizing Research and Development (R&D) investments for maximum returns in other areas, ensuring a more prosperous future for the company and its loyal customer base.
