Elon Musk’s X Setting Up Content Moderation Center in Austin

Elon Musk’s social media company X is creating an advanced content moderation hub in Austin, Texas to improve policing of child abuse content and other harmful material.

The move comes amid criticism of X’s controversial content and perceived lack of moderation since Musk’s takeover. Recent spikes in account suspensions show a crackdown on child exploitation.

The new Austin center aligns with an upcoming Senate hearing on online child sexual abuse and aims to hire 100 moderators by end of 2023. Head of Operations Joe Benarroch stresses the need to build the right team.

While focused on combating child abuse posts, the center will also address broader harms. This fits X’s pledge to enhance moderation despite claims of increased hate speech post-acquisition.

Musk looks to strengthen verification to curb impersonation and misinformation. Though accused of a “free speech absolutist” approach, he vows to permanently suspend impersonating accounts lacking parody indicators.

The Austin base reflects Musk’s strategic push to grow X’s trust and safety capabilities. With specialized moderators and wider content oversight, it seeks a safer online environment.
