Twitter CEO Elon Musk announced details about new features coming to the social platform on Tuesday, including calls and encrypted chat.
Musk hinted at plans for “Twitter 2.0 The Everything App” last year, promising encrypted direct messages (DMs), long-form tweets, and payments.
“Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number,” Musk said on Tuesday in a tweet.
Twitter’s call feature will put it on level with other social networking platforms like Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, which have similar features.
Musk explained that starting on Wednesday, a form of encrypted direct messaging will be available on Twitter, but he did not specify whether calls will also be encrypted.
This week, Twitter said that it will begin a purging process by deleting and archiving accounts that had not been used for several years.
It is unclear whether or not Twitter users will be able to view archived accounts.
Musk added that the number of followers on the microblogging site may decrease due to the removal of dormant accounts.
According to Twitter’s policy, users must log in at least once every 30 days to avoid permanent removal due to inactivity.
