Apple Considering Discontinuing Silicone Accessories

Apple is reportedly gearing up to discontinue its silicone rubber and leather accessories in favor of eco-friendly next-generation materials. Insights shared by renowned Apple enthusiast and leaker “Kosutami” suggest that this transition will encompass a range of popular products, including the iPhone Silicone Case with MagSafe, Sport Band, Solo Loop, and AirTag Loop.

This move aligns with Apple’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint. While silicone rubber accessories have a lower carbon footprint compared to leather, they still lack recycled materials, and materials like fluoroelastomer are notoriously challenging to recycle due to their heat-resistant properties.

The key player in this transformation is the introduction of a premium material known as “FineWoven,” set to replace leather initially but potentially also some silicone accessories down the line. This shift won’t be abrupt; instead, Apple is expected to gradually phase out these materials by not introducing new color options or updates for existing models. For instance, the Sport Band may continue to be available until the current stock is depleted following the Apple Watch Series 9 launch.

Apple’s decision to revamp its accessory materials signals a broader commitment to sustainable practices and environmental responsibility. As we look ahead, we can anticipate the tech giant unveiling additional eco-friendly materials in its accessory lineup, furthering its mission to protect the planet while delivering cutting-edge technology.
